Hull 28 - 10 Northumbria

Hull wrapped up their home campaign of the inaugural Super 6 season by completing the double over Northumbria, outscoring their visitors 6 tries to 2. But they were made to work hard for the 2 points by a plucky Team Northumbria effort.

The opening try of the match came inside 5 minutes, scored by the deserved man of the match for Hull, winger Dave Mankel. He was on hand to finish in the left corner what had been a good passing move along the line by Hull. This was the first of Mankel’s three for the afternoon. Conversion missed.

Hull doubled their lead through a magnificent individual run-in by the ever-improving Brunneye from the half-way line. The little Scrum-Half skinning his tackler just having enough pace over covering tacklers to reach the try-line. Conversion missed.

Tuffour was next to get in on the act for Hull, he went over on the right side after another impressive passing move along the line by Hull. Tuffour’s eleventh try of his debut season and fifth against Northumbria this season. Try converted by Tuffour.

At 14-0 down, it was imperative for Northumbria if they wanted to get in the game that they scored next. They were able to do so on the back of intense pressure on the Hull line, Northumbria were rewarded with their perseverance, Broad crossing in at the corner for Northumbria’s opening try. Hull were left kicking themselves for gifting Northumbria the chance to put pressure on their try-line by conceding sloppy penalties. Try converted by Bate.

Hull regained the initiative through Mankel who did well to score under the attention of several Northumbria defenders. Conversion missed.

It was Northumbria who had the last word right before half-time. The lively Bate slicing through the first line of Hull’s defence. He was able to creep in in right corner despite the best efforts from the covering Tuffour at Fullback.

The second half was less eventful than the first half with only 2 tries being scored.
Mankel completed his hat-trick, getting on the end of speculative grubber kick. Making that 9 tries in his last 5 matches. Conversion missed - 22-10.

The try-scoring for Hull was rounded off by Prop Jack Stearman who barged over under the posts for his first four-pointer of the season. Try converted by Tuffour - 28-10. This more or less wrapped the game up for Hull giving them an 18 point buffer over a Northumbria side in the second half had struggled make any real indentations in the impregnable Hull defence.

Dave Mankel was deserved man of the match. He was well backed up by a solid outing from his Centre Craig Hancock who made his presence felt all afternoon with strong runs and tackles.
Half-backs Bate and Lindley had strong games for the visitors.
