St Mary’s 40 - Northumbria 10

ADAM BARLEY at Staines R.F.C

Having already played each other once, it was now the visitors turn to drive the long distance down to London from Northumbria.  Whether that had an impact on the final score is debatable as St Mary’s flew out of the blocks from the starting whistle, recording their best victory of their campaign so far.

The first half was a test for both teams as they battled it out though it was St Mary’s who showed the early dominance, 24 unanswered points with tries from James Anthony (1), Wes Newton (2) and Alex Raymond (2) before Northumbria pulled one back just before the break with a try piled over by Will Bate.

The second half saw a revitalised Northumbria side try and barge their way back into the game but were seen off by great defensive play from the St Mary’s line before Anthony went over the line again.  Northumbria weren’t finished however and pulled a try back with great play by Bate before St Mary’s then sealed the victory with 2 more tries coming from James Szymik and Ben Spencer.

The game ended on a sour note with a Northumbria player being sent off for dissent but it didn’t dent the victory for St Mary’s who now face a very tough game at Leeds Met next week.
